We're having a Mardi Gras party next weekend. At English Club today we made masks. Thought I'd share.

Hi, Jane,
Cool masks! But, um, isn't it a bit early for a Mardi Gras party? Esp. since good ol' Fat Tuesday isn't until the 28th ...
FYI, you may already know this, but here are a couple of Louisiana-specific terms I learned when I was down there with Teach for America:
1) Mask (v., active): to wear a mask. Example: "Are you going to mask this year?" "Yes, I think I will mask. I didn't mask last year, but I don't want to be recognized this year."
2) Throw (n.): a thing that is thrown from a Mardi Gras parade float. Example: "I hear Ponchartrian will have great throws! Bullions, beads, and all sorts of things!" "I dunno ... I think we'll have more luck taking home some Proteus, Zulu, or Rex throws; they always have good stuff. I have a whole bag of Zulu throws from 2005."
To my North Carolina-bred, Georgia-schooled ear, these were strange usages of what I thought were perfectly ordinary English words. Little did I know that, in Nouveau Orleans et Louisiane, land of "Laissez Les Bons Temps Roulez" and "Lache Pas La Patate," the ordinary can become quite odd, indeed ...
Oh -- and it was the first place I'd ever been where school was out for the Monday before Mardi Gras and for Mardi Gras itself (I was actually outside of NOLA). In NOLA itself, school was out for the whole week -- Monday and Tuesday for parties, Wednesday - Friday for recovery ...
yeah, our party is going to be a bit early. we like to have english club one week to prepare for the party, followed by the party the following week. if we tried to have our mardi gras party at the correct time, "english club weekend" would fall in the middle of our spring break.... so, we bumped it all up a bit.
Mardi Gras is always so special and so much fun. Since I always give a big Mardi Gras Party, I am always looking for that 'special' Mardi Gras party invitations. This year I not only found one place, but three great places to buy Mardi Gras Party Invitations that can be personalized, http://www.cardsshoppe.com/productlist.asp?catid=39 http://www.holiday-invitations.com/Mardi-Gras-Invitations-Cards/browse-26.htm and http://www.invitations-shoppe.com/Invitations_Cards/Mardi_Gras_Invitations_Cards-5-1.htm I added all three sites to my favorites and ordered from http://www.invitations-shoppe.com and was very pleased. I got lots of compliments, and was so happy. It made the holidays extra special!
